"urban warfare is modern warfare in urban areas. the happy marriage of architecture and war does, in fact, go further back than Haussmann. in order to distinguish it, warfare in populated centers before the 20th century is generally defined as siege warfare. viollet le duc and many others of the construction engineers of architecture were first and foremost theorists of fortification. urban battle is very distinct from battle in the open field, both on an operational and a tactical level. to make the city safe, for its citizens, is to open up, to erase all imaginable hide-outs and elements that disturb surveying – to rebuild the open field in the city."
